The ESIP Community uses different documentation dialects (e.g. metadata models) to serve documentation needs for different systems and users. There are many cross-cutting documentation concepts shared across these dialects, so there is necessarily overlap between these models. In fact, it is more appropriate to think of these models as varieties of an underlying documentation language that are a characteristic of a particular group (dialects) than as separate models.

These pages explore fundamental documentation needs and concepts and make connections between these concepts in the principal documentation dialects used in the ESIP Community.

The ESIP Documentation Cluster is working with the U.S. Big Earth Data Initiative (BEDI) to improve the discoverability, accessibility, and usability of Federal data and information products derived from civil Earth observations. BEDI is an [see http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/04/19/taking-pulse-our-planet-new-strategy-earth-observations initiative] of the White House Office of Science Technology and Policy (OSTP) ) that will be coordinated through the US Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Committee on Environment Natural Resources and Sustainability (CENRS). More.

Pulling together reliable information for all of these dialects is an on-going task. If you find problems and can help improve the content, please join the ESIP Documentation Cluster and share your expertise.
