- Welcome to the Semantic Web Cluster activity
Cluster Task Activities
SWEET Ontology and Governance
Data-type and Service Ontology
- Part of the cluster activity involves developing a community-based set of ontologies for use in
- Earth Sciences. The first step is to address data-types and services (web services).
- See recent discussions at http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Breakout_Sessions-Day_1#Technical_Breakout_2b_-_Developing_an_Ontology_for_Services
DSO Workshop @ESIP July 17, 2008
We have two continuation sessions, one on Thursday 2-4, and the other on Friday 8:30-10am.
Please review the previous work on the wiki pages. Please put up your use cases (from the workshop as well as any others) on this site as well.
I have posted the sets of cmaps and ontologies generated to date.
Our agenda will depend on who attends but could be selected from:
continuation on data-type ontology model continuation on service ontology model - we'd started with the ISO defining a test-bed selecting 2-3 use cases and further defining a prototype implementation
depending on numbers we could do these as a group or split up.
Other thoughts? Topics? Priorities?
Remember this is intended to be a working session.
- Last update July 11, 2008 (Peter Fox).

9am, quick intro, review of what we have done, what we plan to achieve
use cases to drive services and service to drive data type needs review of data-type ontologies - ours and others review of service ontologies - ours and others assessment of language encodings (we agreed to use RDF/OWL/OWL-S to start, still okay?)
10:30am break.
11-12:00 working session use cases for data type ontologies
12:00-1:00 lunch
1:00 two more use cases
2:00 continue working session on data ontologies
3:30 break
5:00 regroup and assess, work to data, and match with use cases, prepare for working session on service ontologies
6 pm happy hour, then dinner.
- May 16th
9am review plans for day

10:25 wild and crazy ideas from Howard Burrows
11:00 break
11:15 continue working breakout session on service ontologies (generic and spatial) - classes, and hierarchy based on functions, include inputs, outputs and pre-conditions (semantic ones, sorted by type if possible)
12:30 working lunch
1:30-2:30 plenary report and assess continue breakout and/or review match between service input/outputs and data type ontology
2:30 summary discussion
Preparation details
- Accounts
1. cmap server, contact Rahul 2. planetont.org, contact if you want to upload ontologies here (Peter), otherwise, open access 3. ESIP wiki set up - use this site - please create pages under this heading
Tools we will use
Cmap - the Concept Mapping Tool
Protege - ontology editor - download
When making CMAP modifications that you want others to see, make them using CMAP's Shared Cmaps capability:
- Within CMAP, select Shared CMAPs option when opening the file.
- Navigate to the shared CMAP directory for this work: "Shared Cmaps in Places -> IHMC Public Cmaps (3) -> Users -> ESIP-SemanticWeb
- Two folders (data-type and services)
Guidelines for collaborating with Cmap
Meta-tags to add when making changes: - you can annotate classes with comments.
Note SWEET 2.0 alpha, NOTE: a word processor should be used to examine the files (not Protege, etc.) http://sweet.jpl.nasa.gov/2.0
