ESIP 2015-2020 Strategic Plan Goals

  • GOAL 1: Increase the use and value of Earth science data and information.
  • GOAL 2: Strengthen the ties between observations and user communities (e.g. technologies, research, education and applications).
  • GOAL 3: Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information, and applications.
  • GOAL 4: Position ESIP to play a major role in Earth science issues (e.g. addressing effects of climate change mitigation, adaptation and supporting sustainable science data infrastructure).

Strategic Plan Roadmap

Education Committee (collaboration area) Plan

Education Committee Objective:

  • Build awareness of and value for Earth Science data and data science among educators, especially in the region that surrounds the ESIP summer meeting locations. The Education Committee recruits local teachers to attend the summer ESIP Education workshop held in parallel to the main ESIP meeting (when applicable there is planned overlap of the meetings)
  • Offer in-reach with the remainder of ESIP when applicable. This will help the group remain relevant with its endeavors moving forward with ESIP and the greater education community

Charge to ESIP Education Committee

The committee's purpose is to promote the use of Earth science data, information, tools, and curricula available through the ESIP Federation among educators and learners. The committee's roles are:

  • To promote and facilitate the development and dissemination of educational products, information, and tools related to Earth and Space Sciences to a broad user community using the wealth of data and expertise available in the ESIP Federation
  • To promote and facilitate the collaboration of ESIP members to develop educational applications of Earth science data products, information, and tools
  • To provide a central organization for ESIP Federation educational materials to facilitate and standardize dissemination/distribution
  • To develop collaborative relationships with other organizations involved in educational activities

Things we may do to fulfill our objectives:

  • In 2018, we will
  1. Produce "Out to Lunch” data tool webinars for educators - showcasing ESIP member resources
  2. Learn to code initiative for teachers - Winter meeting session to explore ESIP member collaborations
  3. ESIP Education Workshop partially focused on Coding in the classroom at the ESIP Summer Meeting -Promote the use of coding in the classroom as a science & data collection platform in educational environments through workshops and webinars:
  1. Attend and present at Imagery Education Community and Summit
  2. Present final drone workshop at NSTA regional conference in Milwaukee, WI (Fall 2017)
  1. Develop listing of ESIP member Education programs & products - Promote data-rich educational resources of ESIP members through web links

Things our committee needs to deliver our objectives?

  • Collaboration with other ESIP working groups and committees.
- Cross-linking on skills to be a data scientist
- Sharing applications of learn to code to Earth science stories w/ Education committee
  • Identifying presenters for 10-minute talks on how to use their data tool as part of the "Out to Lunch" series or during the summer workshop session
  • ESIP member participation in 'survey' of member education (and education resources) websites
  • Continued two-way communication with leadership and the ESIP community

How will we know we are on the right track?

  • Evaluation following teacher workshops. This will allow us to correct course and improve content and interactions before the next workshop/outreach event.
  • Formative assessment during events to measure participant knowledge retention
  • Set clear goals for each webinar, meeting, outreach event or other like events
  • Gauge Interest - do this on a continual basis (workshop registration, webinars, etc…)

Cross-connections: How will others know what we are doing in & out of ESIP?

  • Sharing meeting and workshop content through FigShare and partner websites
  • NSTA Sessions - Planning ahead to 2019 NSTA National Conference on coding in the classroom session
  • Professional conferences: (AGU, AMS, GSA etc) - Submit sessions, to sessions, or poster presentations based on the outcomes of the teacher interactions surrounding the summer &other educator workshops
  • Response from recruitment efforts (webinars and summer workshop participation). We have noticed a great response rate.
