Dates

July 14-17, 2015

Venue

The 2015 Summer ESIP Federation Meeting will be held at Asilomar, CA

Theme Options

  • "Enabling Community Resilience with Earth Observation Data" (winner, WORKING THEME)
  • Data Analytics - information to knowledge to wisdom
    • Producer to consumer
  • Big Data and Open Science bruce c (talk)

Background - ESIP Strategic Plan

  • Goal 1: Increase the use and value of Earth science data and information
  • Goal 2: Strengthen the ties between observations and user communities (e.g. technologies, research, education and applications)
  • Goal 3: Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information and applications
  • Goal 4: Position ESIP to play a major role in addressing effects of climate change (mitigation, adaptation).

Meeting Enhancement Issues and Thoughts

  • Movie night & discussion
    • ESIP Summer Film Festival
    • 10 minute films running/looping in individual rooms
  • Plenary with dynamic/compelling speaker recaps the outcomes
  • Swag thoughts: ESIP kerchiefs? ESIP PJ bottoms (Drupal did this in Denver it was a big hit)? ESIP shot glasses (we've already done beer glasses, and these are easier to pack)?
    - Other?
    - beanies (goes with the cool weather theme, perfect for campfires and buttons/badges (see next))
    - sashes and buttons for badge contest
  • Wrap-up at end of the meeting
  • Campfire report outs
    • Need someone very engaging (e.g., Peter Fox)
    • Visioneers would act as "camp counselors" (if not, many of the following ideas will not work)
    • Can start as a "plenary" campout, and then break out into "campsites"
  • walking breakout sessions
  • evening event at Monterey Bay Aquarium (?)
  • MBARI open house on Saturday
  • Leverage "local" folks - NOAA, USGS, etc - who may not yet be engaged with ESIP
  • Inviting local Uni students as observers to make a "daily paper" - maybe link it to the app?
    • Could we look beyond the student fellows (maybe fund a couple?), beyond the local Unis
    • Beyond the social media that we're already using - a more consolidated experience
  • Hearing the views/observations from outside, non-ESIP-indoctrinated people can be hugely informative
  • Requests on a one-on-one basis are much more productive that broad emails to esip-all, when we're looking for folks to volunteer
  • Will require outside transportation services scheduled if we're serious about field trips; or possible set up rental car car pooling
  • Thursday PM Hackapalooza
  • (not discussed in call, suggested by Steve D) Scavenger Hunt

Plenary Talks
