The NASA Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Software Reuse Working Group (WG) was created to enable and facilitate the reuse of software assets, including open source products, within the NASA Earth science community. This WG is involved in a number of activities for this purpose, including:

  • Writing guidelines to help developers make their assets available to others
  • Working towards prototyping a NASA-only Reuse Enablement System (RES) for Earth science reusable software assets
  • Developing and maintaining a web site to promote and provide information about reuse
  • Developing a software reuse peer-recognition award

Some of the goals of the WG are: to spend less time, money, and effort on software development; to increase productivity and improve quality through reuse; and to increase the number of available reusable assets. The WG wants to be able to provide these benefits for the full Earth science community, even though much of its work is focused on NASA.

This 2 hour breakout session, planned for the morning, is designed to discuss software reuse in a broad context, among all members of the ESIP Federation and the general Earth science community, regardless of organization or role. Topics will include, but are not limited to:

  • An introduction to the Software Reuse WG activities
  • Making software available for reuse
  • How existing software assets are reused
  • Ways to encourage reuse
  • Barriers to reuse and how to break them down

Who should attend?

  • Anyone involved with software projects, from developers to managers
