Ontologies and the Semantic Web (presented by the Semantic Web Cluser)

Introduction to ontologies and their application in solving some of the basic problems in Earth science metadata. Includes discussion of standards underlying the Semantic Web, such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Web Ontology Language (OWL). These XML languages provide a framework to explicitly describe heterogeneous data models in support of semantic interoperability.

This tutorial will introduce the Semantic Web and discuss current applications and opportunities for collaboration.
