Session Title * Computing in the Classroom

Session Short Name 38 character max

Draft! Session Description * Computer skills are near and dear to the ESIP mission. By encouraging teachers to learn how to code, develop smartphone apps, and design story maps, we help them build the data scientist pipeline. Learning computer skills will help teachers to encourage their students to be creators, more than just a consumer, of the technology around us. In this session we will discuss specific goals for teachers (and their students), options of different computing curriculum, and plan the summer session at the ESIP Education workshop 2018.

Session Type: Working session Speakers: Four 15 minute presenters (including the teacher who won Funding Friday - why she is so excited to include coding in the classroom). Action: Send email to the ESIP-ALL to find people interested in presenting - (hour of code presenters?) Incl. ESRI for story mapping (define what we want them to show, eg web mapping service) Action: Shelley to send around to the ESIP Education List the session description for sign off. Then will submit it.

Moderators: Shelley

Session Audience

Is coding really the right new program for the Education Committee? People may be interested in story mapping Web (m)Apps & Story Maps - would build on a ESRI product Beauty and Joy of Computing - curriculum is online http://bjc.edc.org/bjc-r/topic/topic.html?topic=nyc_bjc/1-intro-loops.topic&course=bjc4nyc.html&novideo&noassignment

Turn it into a “book club” event - invite educators to engage. Get together to try out new exercises together. Eg. could have a story mapping series; still is computing Winter meeting: planning session. Biweekly basis, take an hour together to work through the Beauty and Joy of Computing curriculum. COme together at the Winter Meeting to prepare for the Summer Workshop. Meeting for “book club” - every other Wednesday right after Out2Lunch - First would be 11/1; 12:30PM Central Action: Margaret sends around necessary chapter of Curriculum
