Overview

ESIP Student Fellows are a group of graduate students that are interested in bridging the gap between informatics and Earth Science and applying research to real-world problems. This fellowship provides students a chance to work closely with professionals in an interdisciplinary, cross-sector group on current Earth Science problems. The students become engaged in the group as rapporteurs, documenting the work of the group on the monthly telecons and at the semi-annual meetings (Summer/Winter). As the student become more familiar with the group activities he or she may chose to tie in their own research to the group activities.

    • Document monthly telecons (~1 hr/month) on the ESIP Commons meeting template
    • Document Summer and Winter Meetings (~6 days total) using the ESIP Commons meeting template
  • Attend the Education Committee's Crash Course for Collaborative Technology - Support the cluster's use of collaborative technologies including, but not limited to: Twitter, WebEx, MediaWiki, Drupal, Facebook
  • Write one blog post every other month on cluster aspect or your research as it relates to cluster.
  • Share your research with community at the poster sessions during physical meeting

  • Exposure to potential job tracks - government, industry, academic

Term

Fellows will serve a year-term starting from April 2012 - March 2013. Fellows will receive a stipend of $2,000 for participation, paid in two installments (one at the Summer Meeting and one at the conclusion of the year). ESIP Collaboration Areas

  • Air Quality - The overarching objective of the Air Quality Working Group is to build better connections, both technical and interpersonal, between and among air quality data providers and data users. Recent efforts have been focused on building an air quality community data and information system.
  • Climate Education Working Group – The Climate Change Education Working Group is building connections between educators, educational product developers and scientists who are concerned about climate change education. Resource review, outreach and regional educational program development are key activities.
  • Data and Information Quality – A new cluster, its objective is to bring together people from various disciplines to assess aspects of quality for remote sensing data. The cluster will be identifying and sharing best practices with a goal to build a framework for consistent capture, harmonization and presentation of data quality in support of climate change studies, Earth science and applications.
  • Data Preservation and Stewardship - The objective of the new Preservation and Stewardship Cluster is to support the long-term preservation of Earth system science data and information. This Cluster provides a forum for ESIP members to collaborate on data preservation issues.
  • Discovery – The Discovery Cluster was formed to address interoperability and standards issues related to data discovery. The objective of the cluster is to enable data centers to agree on an open and interoperable discovery standard.
  • Energy and Climate - The objective of the ESIP Energy Cluster is to facilitate interactions and build better connections, both technical and interpersonal, among policy and decision makers, climate change and energy data providers, decision support tool providers, and end users
  • Environmental Decision Making - Earth Science data and research can play an important role in informing decision making activities and applications in the commercial and public sectors. One of the main priorities of the Decisions cluster is to support ESIP member evaluation activities and assessments concerning the value of Earth Science data.
  • Semantic Web - The objective of the Semantic Web Cluster is to facilitate application areas of ESIP using semantic web methodologies and technologies. The cluster provides a forum for dissemination of best practices, technical infusion experience and lessons learned and continuing education for emerging semantic technologies. The cluster also plays a governance role in the development of community vocabularies and ontologies relevant to ESIP members.
