What

The DataCite Scheme is a list of core metadata properties chosen for the accurate and consistent identification of a resource for citation and retrieval purposes along with recommended use instructions. The resource that is being identified can be of any kind, but is typically a dataset.

Who

DataCite is managed by the Metadata Working group – a part of the DataCite International Consortium.

Objective

Create a persistent approach to access, identification, sharing, and re-use of datasets.

Notes

Version 3.1 introduced some significant changes from earlier versions. Furthermore, in order to support future extensibility, collaboration between DataCite and the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) Science and Metadata Community (SAM) is producing a version of the schema in a Dublin Core Application Profile Format. The application profile version will be maintained with all future versions of the Schema.
