The NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System uses different metadata models to serve specific needs for different systems and users. There are many cross-cutting documentation concepts shared across these systems, so there is necessarily overlap between these models. In fact, it is more appropriate to think of these models as varieties of an underlying documentation language that are a characteristic of a particular group (dialects) than as separate models.

These pages explore fundamental documentation needs and concepts and make connections between these concepts in the principal documentation dialects used in NASA Earth Science.
