Table 1: Concept of construction of new names

Table 1 provides the basic ideas of a concept for the construction of standard_names for aerosols and chemistry. The ideas in table 1 are mainly based on the PRISM project (Peter van Velthoven) see PRISM Standard Name Tables, latest Version, V 1.3

Remarks

  • what is the difference between atmosphere and in_air? should be in_air only to distinguish from in_cloud etc.
  • allways give atmosphere/ocean/soil?
  • articles and prepositions should be avoided
  • try to use SI units (e.g. not hours but seconds)
  • how to distinguish ion - radicals, e.g. NO3 ?
  • there is for some variable both mass_fraction and mole_fraction, I think we should take mole_fraction for gases and mass_fraction for aerosols, but only one at a time
  • for sulfur and carbon aerosols the units should be in mass(S) and mass(C), respectively
  • for column mass, the name 'content' is used, it should be changed to column
  • what is equivalent_thicknss_at_stp_of_atmosphere_ozone_content?

  • Should we also suggest names for variables and files?
