- Specification Phase: Identifies intended use, reasoning requirements, and scope of ontologies in the
application. Missing initial requirements in this phase would result in developing insufficient ontologies and is a waste of time and money.
- Conceptualization Phase: Structures the knowledge of the domain of interest as meaningful models at the
knowledge level. This phase strongly depends on a good strategy for knowledge acquisition.
- Formalization Phase: Transforms the conceptual model (i.e. the result from the conceptualization phase)
into a formal or semi-formal model.
- Implementation Phase: Implements the ontology in a formal language.
- Maintenance Phase: Updates and corrects ontologies, which includes possibilities for feedback and
versioning.
