'''Assessment Update:'''  Rich Scheffe briefly reviewed the systems assessment being prepared by Ross & Associates.  He indicated that the first draft requires more work, and that review by this committee should wait for a more mature product.  Work is on-going and EPA will provide input on the next draft (if available) to the committee for the next meeting.

'''VIEWS Update:''' Rich Scheffe provided an update on various related assessments.  He mentioned the (1) Ross & Associates systems assessment that is ongoing, (2) a proposed effort to make outputs from EPA’s CAMQ applications publicly available, and (3) a VIEWS case example that is just getting underway.  The last item would involve post processing and visualizations for gaseous data sets.

Interoperability Update:  Nick Mangus indicated that the wiki page had been updated on the subject of interoperability.  He noted “Payload Contents” and “Outstanding Issues” as important additions.  Committee members are invited to review and add data elements.  Barriers to WCS service and movement of data need additional attention.

NASA Roses Update:  Uma Shankar took the lead in summarizing activities and accomplishments of the Air Quality Decision Support System (DSS) project; see the file “UNC-CIRA-ROSES07_project_report_1.doc”.  Topics included: Kickoff Workshop; Project Website; Refinement of Objectives; Exploration of Data Portal Ideas (including Giovanni, RSIG, and ways to get data updates); Outreach; and Investigation of Suitable Satellite Data.  Performance measures, as identified during the Design Workshop, are of continuing interest in comparing the enhanced version of DSS relative to the baseline system.  The project is progressing on schedule.

Discussion of Matrix from Rich:  Rich Scheffe described a core set of air quality related data that could service a variety of users and provide a reference marker for the Ross assessment; see the file “Core Attributes for a Centralized Air Quality Data System or Portal.doc”.  VIEWS is one possible example of a platform and basis for processing such data sets.  How to characterize data with a small number of parameters is an important challenge.  Space/time is a universal component of these data.

Participants appeared to generally support the use of VIEWS post processing capabilities as applied to ozone for the case example in (3) above. The issue of what constitutes an original data base and the need for related metadata on VIEWS needs to be addressedIt was also noted that questions typically applied to ozone may be different from those applied to the IMPROVE data base and that new visualizations may need to be developed for ozone.  Also a community-oriented approach is desirable with the capabilities that user’s want; there is a need to make sure that the desired functionality is available and that analyses are not limited to the current system environment, e.g., there may be better optionsThere is a clear need to frame the questions/tools/products for user interested in an hourly format for ozone.  It was agreed that Scheffe / Schichtel / Mintz / Others need to discuss this further through a forum that (1) allows for common design elements to be identified, (2) an infrastructure independent of where data is located to be addressed, and (3) documentation that will support implementation.  Initial steps might involve importing a subset of ozone data, placing it in the VIEWS data base format, and identifying guidance on aggregation of data.  Suggestions should be forwarded to Rich Scheffe.

Action Items / Next call: There will be no Ad Hoc Advisory Committee conference call on September 17The next call will be Wednesday, October 1, 2:00 – 3:00pm EDTFor this call, the agenda is likely to include a status review of the draft assessment report being prepared by Ross & Associates.  Members should continue to access the Community Air Quality Data System at http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Community_Air_Quality_Data_System_Workspace .

'''Systems Assessment Update:'''  David Mintz indicated that the assessment by Ross & Associates is underway and that interviews with systems managers are in progress, i.e., about one-third of the way throughIt is expected that preliminary results will be available for sharing by the end of August.

'''Other Topics:'''  There is a need for a more effective way to proceed on connectivity conversations. Some point for aggregation of activities, like a project clearinghouse is desirable, e.g., to facilitate connections between AQS – DataFed – VIEWS.  David McCabe also mentioned the availability of the GEOSS website that recently became operational.
