NEXT CONFERENCE CALL:

Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in Rm. C300A from 2:00 – 3:00pm EDT; call-in number is 919-541-1590. Topics for the next meeting may be identified in a new area on the wiki, along with relevant documents, at http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Community_Air_Quality_Data_System_Workspace . There will be no conference call on July 23.

COMMITTEE DISCUSSION:

Assessment Update: Rich Scheffe briefly reviewed the systems assessment being prepared by Ross & Associates. He indicated that the first draft requires more work, and that review by this committee should wait for a more mature product. Work is on-going and EPA will provide input on the next draft (if available) to the committee for the next meeting.

Interoperability Update: Nick Mangus indicated that the wiki page had been updated on the subject of interoperability. He noted “Payload Contents” and “Outstanding Issues” as important additions. Committee members are invited to review and add data elements. Barriers to WCS service and movement of data need additional attention.

NASA Roses Update: Uma Shankar took the lead in summarizing activities and accomplishments of the Air Quality Decision Support System (DSS) project; see the file “UNC-CIRA-ROSES07_project_report_1.doc”. Topics included: Kickoff Workshop; Project Website; Refinement of Objectives; Exploration of Data Portal Ideas (including Giovanni, RSIG, and ways to get data updates); Outreach; and Investigation of Suitable Satellite Data. Performance measures, as identified during the Design Workshop, are of continuing interest in comparing the enhanced version of DSS relative to the baseline system. The project is progressing on schedule.

Discussion of Matrix from Rich: Rich Scheffe described a core set of air quality related data that could service a variety of users and provide a reference marker for the Ross assessment; see the file “Core Attributes for a Centralized Air Quality Data System or Portal.doc”. VIEWS is one possible example of a platform and basis for processing such data sets. How to characterize data with a small number of parameters is an important challenge. Space/time is a universal component of these data.

Action Items / Next call:

There will be no Ad Hoc Advisory Committee conference call on September 17. The next call will be Wednesday, October 1, 2:00 – 3:00pm EDT. For this call, the agenda is likely to include a status review of the draft assessment report being prepared by Ross & Associates. Members should continue to access the Community Air Quality Data System at http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Community_Air_Quality_Data_System_Workspace .
