ISO Metadata Standards and Interoperable Understanding
Ted Habermann, NOAA/NESDIS/NGDC
Documentation provides the context that adds understanding and knowledge to data. The ISO Standards for documenting data (19115, 19115-2), and services (19119) extend the range of standard documentation considerably beyond previously available approaches. They include increased utilization of technologies like UML, XML and linking and content areas like data quality and processing history. These extensions can build an emerging foundation of data interoperability into an infrastructure for interoperable understanding. This process will involve active collaboration between many environmental data providers and archives all over the world that are currently in the process of adopting and understanding how to effectively use the ISO Standards.
This seminar will describe ISO capabilities in the context of parallels between metadata tools and data interoperability approaches developed and used by UCAR and others. I will demonstrate how directories shared over the web, transport standards, and community conventions build the foundation for documentation access and data understanding. I will also demonstrate crosswalks and connections between ISO, THREDDS, and NetCDF documentation and some ideas and approaches to improving documentation across the entire spectrum of environmental

“Provenance collection as a commodity and representation as a necessity”
Beth Plale
Provenance or lineage of simple or complex data objects is essential to the reuse of the object because it enables among other things, proper attribution, assessment of quality, etc. For a provenance collection tool to be broadly beneficial, however, it must be flexible in how it gathers information. In this talk we discuss extensions to the Karma provenance collection and representation system that we are undertaking to make the tool useful to a broad set of users. We further discuss the need for provenance interoperability and alternate forms of archival representation.
Beth’s Bio
Beth Plale is Director of the Data To Insight Center of the Pervasive Technology Institute, and associate professor in the School of Informatics and Computing. Her Ph.D. focused on real time monitoring to detect behaviors of remote objects. This is her 9th year at Indiana University preceded by a Postdoctoral Fellow position at Georgia Institute of Technology, a PhD from SUNY Binghamton, and a stint in industry.

“The GEOSS Clearinghouse”
Doug Nebert and Chaowei Phil Yang
The GEOSS Clearinghouse is a common search facility for the Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observation (GEO). Through the harvest or distributed search of registered metadata catalogues, EO data, services, and related resources can be discovered and accessed. Based on the GeoNetwork open source project, the GEOSS Clearinghouse supports a variety of geospatial standards including CSW, Z39.50, and SRU for search, FGDC and ISO metadata, and WMS related OGC standards for data access and visualization, as linked from the metadata. We will present and demonstrate the clearinghouse and answer questions. The clearinghouse is developed through a collaboration between FGDC (www.fgdc.gov) and GMU’s Center for Intelligent Spatial Computing (CISC, cisc.gmu.edu).
The effort is led by Doug Nebert (FGDC) and Phil Yang (Co-Director of CISC). The development is conducted by Hannes Wu, Kai Liu, Zhenlong Li, Wenwen Li, Tim Miao. The project is supported by FGDC grant, ESIP Products & Services and Air Quality Committees, and NASA Geospatial Interoperability grant. The clearinghouse is operating at clearinghouse.cisc.gmu.edu.

Zhangfan Xing’s Abstract:
Pomegranate is an open source python application that exposes science data stores, such as HDF and NetCDF files, in the web way. It implements the Webification-Science (w10n-sci) API. The core idea of webification (w10n) is to make inner components of a data store directly addressable and accessible via well-defined and meaningful URLs. We will discuss the nascent w10n-sci API, demo a Pomegranate-powered RESTful web service, and elaborate on how this enabling technology can lead to powerful Earth Science applications.

- ESIP Summer Meeting Technical Workshops
Review of the current list of submitted abstracts http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Summer_2010_Technical_Workshops Discussion on possible scheduling
Hook’s Presentation Abstract: Workflow engines are becoming more commonly used in Earth Science data systems. But the with plethora of workflow engines to choose from and the variability of their capabilities, it may be time consuming to assess which workflow engine is best suited for a particular domain adaptation. We will explore the diverse capabilities of a few selected workflow engines and discuss some of the relevant capabilities useful for Earth Science data systems.

2. Suggestions for Technical Workshops for upcoming the ESIP Summer Meeting in Knoxville, TN [Visioneers telecon link: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Visioneers_Telecon_Page] 3. Interoperability Standards Outreach Package Development – Next Steps! (Karl to lead)
Presentation Abstract: On 22 January, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group launched the planned mid-term evaluation of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Over the coming months an evaluation team will examine the progress that has been made toward achieving the strategic goals that are intended to achieve the GEOSS Vision. In particular, the evaluation will look at the foundation that has been laid for GEOSS as well as progress along the path to implementing GEOSS and the impacts of GEOSS in the Earth observing community. Direct feedback from the Earth observation community is necessary to complete this evaluation. The evaluation team is conducting a survey, interviews, and reaching out to participants to locate other documents and reviews of GEOSS and its components. We would like to invite the members of ESIP to contribute to the evaluation however they can but especially by responding to the survey and spreading awareness of the evaluation to their colleagues. The survey is available online until the end of March and members of the Team are working to make contact with and collect feedback directly from the users of GEOSS on a short timeline. If you know of research literature, white papers, or other items such as evaluations of GEOSS that could be helpful to the team, or if you have further questions, we would be happy to hear from you. To follow up, please contact Team member John Adamec by email at john.adamec@noaa.gov.

Feb 03, 2010 Telecon Agenda:
Rants and Raves Webinar Series Kickoff - February 03 at 01:00 PM CST
The ESIP Information Technology and Interoperability Committee this year will host Rants and Raves Webinar series. The Rants and Raves Webinar provides a platform to any ESIP member to present any Information Technology and Interoperability related issues, seek suggestions/ideas or present cool new technology useful to the ESIP community. Dr. Christopher Lynnes will kickoff the series with a rant on the difficulties associated with Earth Science data on Feb 03, 2010 at 1:00 PM CT.
Earth Science Data: Why So Difficult?
Dr. Christopher Lynnes
Assembling a multi-sensor set of data for, say, a volcanic eruption means days of wandering cyberspace to find data and pry it loose from the custom search interfaces that jealously guard it. Following the Search is a slog of weeks reading format and QA documents, then cobbling together code to beat the data into a form that can be used safely in analysis tools. Why so difficult?$%#@^%!???
Above rant to be followed by a (mostly) calm and rational discussion of ways toward a solution.
Other Agenda Items: - Suggestions for Technical Workshops for Summer Meeting (ideas for different theme focus, volunteers to lead different themes) - Volunteers for giving Rants and Raves Webinar - Review of semi-structured publication strawman - Review of the proposal budget
