1. Status of ECS Reference Architecture

    • We need to put in Users and Scenarios

    • We need put a few more user stories

  • Next Step:
    • send a message to people who signed up to be an author but haven’t authored anything
    • And take the people who were signed up as reviewers to have them review
    • We could add more context to the user stories, deadline of three weeks
  • New category of User called Data Scientists
    • expertise is in extraction of data
    • knowledge not necessarily in domain science
    • question is should we start looking at this group to see if they have unique needs
    • as a collaboratory can we help them
    • Chris was reading the Nate Silver book and realized he was a data scientists
    • not trying to figure out the science, they don’t use benchmark data sets
    • we might want to consider as a community to build benchmark data sets

2. Petr Votava will talk about the NASA Earth Exchange

  • https://c3.nasa.gov/nex/
  • Goal: collaborative environment, brings scientists and researchers together
  • three groups of people: NEX infrastructure, NEX Data/Software platform, NEX Science
  • drivers: people spend a lot of their time dealing with data, sharing knowledge is difficult, no standard mechanisms for transparency and repeatability
  • Target users: backend, research scientists, interdisciplinary, graduate student researchers
  • Data: climate datasets, prism, modis land,
  • web portal will be redesigned this year
  • Goal: StackOverflow for the Earth Sciences
  • Scaling up to global features
  • Collaboration portal, centralized data repository,
  • Summer workshop 2013: try to prepare some of these virtual machines with workflows, data, will provide students with access and hand on labs
  • Users: direct, API, and workflow, open source project
  • on ground floor of development

    • Earth Science Community Users
    • NEX Science Users
  • Constraints:
    • Security
    • Policies
    • Resources: Disk, computing, time
  • User Contribution: Data, Tools, Models, Codes
  • Challenges:
    • Big-data may generate even more big data
    • Workflow Management: Vis Trails
    • Science Data Management: MySQL, Mondo DB, OpenDAP
