  1. Specification Phase: Identifies intended use, reasoning requirements, and scope of ontologies in the

application. Missing initial requirements in this phase would result in developing insufficient ontologies and is a waste of time and money.

  1. Conceptualization Phase: Structures the knowledge of the domain of interest as meaningful models at the

knowledge level. This phase strongly depends on a good strategy for knowledge acquisition.

  1. Formalization Phase: Transforms the conceptual model (i.e. the result from the conceptualization phase)

into a formal or semi-formal model.

  1. Implementation Phase: Implements the ontology in a formal language.
  2. Maintenance Phase: Updates and corrects ontologies, which includes possibilities for feedback and

versioning.
