The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Agriculture and Climate Cluster (ACC) is hosting a talk by Matthew Lange (Principle Investigator for the International Center for Food Ontology Operability Data and Semantics, IC-FOODS, at the University of California Davis) this coming Tuesday (2020-10-20) at 1500 hrs EASTERN Daylight Time. Please join us! As usual, these webinars are open to all, please forward this notice to those whom you think may benefit from the talk. No prior registration is required.

The title of Matthew's talk is "The emerging Semantic Web and Internet of Food: New technologies, opportunities, food supply vulnerabilities, and existential threats to established ag/food hegemonies." Matthew will be introduced by Paco Nathan (Managing Partner at Derwen).

No prior registration is required. The meeting coordinates are:

Context:
Over the past year, the ACC's activities have been focused on various science and technology topics that wrap around the transdisciplinary pipeline connecting data to decisions. These topics include ontologies, natural language processing, data needs for near- and long-term land and hazard management, soil morphology, aquatic nutrient pollution, wildfire mitigation, wildfire response, and climate resilience. Over the fall of 2020 and leading into 2021, we continue this transdisciplinary journey by looking at the role that our community plays in applications related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Matthew's talk is directly relevant to SDG Goal 2 ("Zero Hunger").

IC-FOOD aims to create "standards, as well as technical and computational capabilities" to "advance the burgeoning fields of Food Systems, Food, and Health Informatics". Furthermore, the project seeks to enable "intelligent, precise, eco-friendly, and increasingly democratized and distributed food growing, processing, and personalized recommendation systems capable of improving our food system for increased sustainability, health, and delight of food."
