ESIP Vice President Nominee

It would be an honor to serve as the ESIP Vice President in this coming year. I have been formally involved in ESIP since 2011 and led the membership application process for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). During my career at NCAR, I have held positions in software development, system administration, data management, proposal PI, project manager and facility management. Through ESIP, I have met many experts in informatics and data sciences and the experience has both strengthened my career and brought about many friendships among leaders and professionals who understand the value and importance of earth science data. All of this great work and collaboration cannot happen without the underpinnings that ESIP leadership provides, however, and so I believe the Vice President’s function is crucial to the continuing success of ESIP.

I have served as an ESIP Board Member (2014-2015 and 2017-2018), as a member of the Constitution and ByLaws Committee (2015) and as Chair of the Governance Committee in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, with lots of help from others, I led the Governance Committee to complete a new set of policies and procedures for ESIP. The work involved locating previous documents and policies, revising them and ensuring that they do not conflict with our ByLaws, organizing discussions among groups of stakeholders for feedback and finally acquiring approval for the new policies and procedures from the ESIP Board in October 2017. I was the recipient of the 2017 ESIP President’s Award in recognition of this work. I have also developed an ESIP Lab Incubator proposal and have been an active participant in various ESIP clusters.

If elected I would continue to promote the great work we are doing and create initiatives that articulate the value of ESIP to organizations and communities, particularly for use by early/mid career individuals for whose participation can lead to career growth and new opportunities, just as it has in my case. I would make a special effort to listen to participants during ESIP meetings to get a sense of member experiences and help suggest improvements where necessary. I would also like to strengthen support and connections between ESIP and the National Science Foundation, the funding sponsor I’ve worked with during my entire career.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the earth science data community in this capacity.
