< [[Education | Education]]

Project to develop a permanent loan and a lending library of instruments which includes the low-cost, high-quality, hand-held, durable, Blue-tooth enabled, and programmable multi-sensor instruments.

=='''Project’s Goals :''' ==
* To inspire students to be involved in science,
* To supply students and teachers with inexpensive, high-quality scientific instruments to productively collect data in their classrooms
* To make data relevant to students which hopefully will lead to an increased interest in the sciences.

===Strategic Goals===
The Technology Permanent Loan & Lending Library supports the following ESIP Strategic Goals:
Goal 1: Increase the use and value of Earth science data and information
Goal 2: Strengthen the ties between observations and user communities (e.g. technologies, research, education and applications).

=='''Work Plan:''' ==
There are planned to be two sets of teachers using the instruments (PocketLab).
'''Multi-year permanent loan''': One classroom (students working in teams) set of instruments for an ESIP-associated teacher can develop, test, revise, and extend classroom curriculum for multiple years.
'''Lending Library''': of a classroom (team) set to an ESIP-associated educator on an annual basis for the entire school year. With the ESIP funding, we ease the issue of cost while the simplicity of application creates a variety of opportunities across a broader set of grades. By focusing on a single instrument, we can ease into the implementation of a lending-library and build environmental-focused lesson plans.

Teachers will provide an outline on how the instruments will be used in their classes. (number of classes, class names, approx number of students, age range, project topic(s)). They will also be encouraged to integrate /compare to Earth science data collected through ESIP-communities for at least one lesson.

ESIP will purchase and distribute the PocketLab instruments and ship to the teachers.

Teachers will provide a monthly update of progress

At the end of the school year, teachers will provide a short report with description of best project with data results as an example for others, and 2-3 classroom lessons shared to ESIP and (ideally) with the PocketLab website.

Communicating project results and project closure:
* Poster about progress of data collection, instrument use, lessons learned in the classroom
* Uploading of lessons to the ESIP Ed wiki, special project area and to (Ideally)PocketLab website

=='''Timeline:''' ==
==Education Committee (collaboration area) Plan==
===Education Committee Objective:===
* Build awareness of and value for Earth Science data and data science among educators, especially in the region that surrounds the ESIP summer meeting locations. The Education Committee recruits local teachers to attend the summer ESIP Education workshop held in parallel to the main ESIP meeting (when applicable there is planned overlap of the meetings)
* Offer in-reach with the remainder of ESIP when applicable. This will help the group remain relevant with its endeavors moving forward with ESIP and the greater education community

==== Charge to ESIP Education Committee ====
The committee's purpose is to promote the use of Earth science data, information, tools, and curricula available through the ESIP Federation among educators and learners. The committee's roles are:

:*To promote and facilitate the development and dissemination of educational products, information, and tools related to Earth and Space Sciences to a broad user community using the wealth of data and expertise available in the ESIP Federation
:*To promote and facilitate the collaboration of ESIP members to develop educational applications of Earth science data products, information, and tools
:*To provide a central organization for ESIP Federation educational materials to facilitate and standardize dissemination/distribution
:*To develop collaborative relationships with other organizations involved in educational activities

===Things we may do to fulfill our objectives:===
* In 2018, we will
:# Produce "Out to Lunch” data tool webinars for educators - showcasing ESIP member resources
:# Learn to code initiative for teachers - Winter meeting session to explore ESIP member collaborations
:# ESIP Education Workshop partially focused on Coding in the classroom at the ESIP Summer Meeting -Promote the use of coding in the classroom as a science & data collection platform in educational environments through workshops and webinars:
::# Attend and present at Imagery Education Community and Summit
::# Present final drone workshop at NSTA regional conference in Milwaukee, WI (Fall 2017)
:# Develop listing of ESIP member Education programs & products - Promote data-rich educational resources of ESIP members through web links

===Things our committee needs to deliver our objectives?===
* Collaboration with other ESIP working groups and committees.
:- Cross-linking on skills to be a data scientist
:- Sharing applications of learn to code to Earth science stories w/ Education committee
* Identifying presenters for 10-minute talks on how to use their data tool as part of the "Out to Lunch" series or during the summer workshop session
* ESIP member participation in 'survey' of member education (and education resources) websites
* Continued two-way communication with leadership and the ESIP community

===How will we know we are on the right track?===
* Evaluation following teacher workshops. This will allow us to correct course and improve content and interactions before the next workshop/outreach event.
* Formative assessment during events to measure participant knowledge retention
* Set clear goals for each webinar, meeting, outreach event or other like events
* Gauge Interest - do this on a continual basis (workshop registration, webinars, etc…)

=== Cross-connections: How will others know what we are doing in & out of ESIP? ===
* Sharing meeting and workshop content through FigShare and partner websites
* NSTA Sessions - Planning ahead to 2019 NSTA National Conference on coding in the classroom session
* Professional conferences: (AGU, AMS, GSA etc) - Submit sessions, to sessions, or poster presentations based on the outcomes of the teacher interactions surrounding the summer &other educator workshops
* Response from recruitment efforts (webinars and summer workshop participation). We have noticed a great response rate.
'''Exploration of Coding book-club'''
ESIP Education Committee is starting a book club-style exploration of coding. The purpose is to explore the hype behind Hour of Code and other coding projects (Girls who code, etc) to find something we might harness as content for ESIP education workshops, eg How can we promote use of Earth Science data through coding?

Every other week, following our Out2Lunch presentations, we'll spend ~45 minutes discussing what we've learned from the week's assignment. Our first session will be this Wednesday, Nov 1, immediately following the Out2Lunch presentation. We'll continue meeting for as long (or short) as it seems useful.

'''Nov. 1 Assignment:'''

5 minute read: http://bjc.edc.org/bjc-r/cur/compare.html:
• Comparison with CSP Framework
• Computer Science Principles
• Visual Programming - Just the green background area (feel free to read more but this is a good highlight on what is visual programming)

2 minute read: quick explanation about the Hour of Code:
https://support.code.org/hc/en-us/articles/203524386-What-is-the-Hour-of-Code-

As you try out these coding tutorials, think about (take a meta-cognitive perspective) ... how would you modify these ’tutorials’ or create a tutorial to be science / earth science related?

Spend 1/2 hour on Unit 1:
http://bjc.edc.org/bjc-r/topic/topic.html?topic=nyc_bjc/1-intro-loops.topic&course=bjc4nyc.html&novideo&noassignment

Optional:
Try this Hour of Code activity (it is more like a 15 minute activity): Artist
https://studio.code.org/s/artist/stage/1/puzzle/2

If you have an ipad or android device, download the app: Tynker. And try one of the coding 'games'. You might start to notice that the process of 'teaching' for each of the examples I sent is similar.

Browse through these Hour of Code activities:
https://code.org/learn

(super optional) Look at Hour of Code Apps page:
https://code.org/educate/applab
'''Nov. 15 Assignment:'''

LuAnn will explore how the concepts in Hello Processing! might work as an intro to some macro-writing in ImageJ.

Shelley: Start drawing a flow-chart / spectrum graphic of the spectrum of coding

Shelley: Find an hour of code - visual block coding style - that could be complementary with the code produced in Hello Processing!

Carla: Contribute a brief overview of the history of coding in education

Becky plans to come up with some kind of model: coalescing water sprites, for instance.

Margaret will try the Ice-off dates activity using Google Sheets as a macro

Anyone: what would you like to contribute?
Seoldshttps://wiki.esipfed.org/w/index.php?title=ESIP_Exploration_of_Coding&diff=62720ESIP Exploration of Coding2017-11-08T00:22:52Z
Seolds:

'''Exploration of Coding book-club'''
ESIP Education Committee is starting a book club-style exploration of coding. The purpose is to explore the hype behind Hour of Code and other coding projects (Girls who code, etc) to find something we might harness as content for ESIP education workshops.

As you try out these coding tutorials, think about (take a meta-cognitive perspective) ... how would you modify these ’tutorials’ or create a tutorial to be science / earth science related?

Spend 1/2 hour on Unit 1:
Optional:
Try this Hour of Code activity (it is more like a 15 minute activity): Artist

If you have an ipad or android device, download the app: Tynker. And try one of the coding 'games'. You might start to notice that the process of 'teaching' for each of the examples I sent is similar.
