'''Welcome to the ESIP Information Quality Cluster'''

The objective of IQ cluster is to bring together people from various disciplines to assess aspects of quality of remote sensing data. We will be learning and sharing best practices with a goal to build a framework for consistent capture, harmonization and presentation of data quality for the purposes of climate change studies, earth science and applications.
This wikispace will be taking shape in the coming months to describe activities within the ESIP Federation related to Information Quality.

This ESIP-inspired tool was developed to provide a free, simple way for the average person to view current satellite data, at any Earth location, from a web browser.
For the curious technophile, what follows is a high-level description of the implementation. The client side was written as a Java applet to meet the requirement
of working in a web browser. Flex/ActionScript (i.e., Flash) may have been a better choice to achieve higher web browser acceptance - maybe a later version. The
applet communicates to a Java servlet running on the web server the page was loaded from. The servlet uses the VisAD library (freely available from the University
of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center) to request the actual data from an appropriate server via the ADDE protocol, and returns the data just like a
normal web server would return a GIF image.

You can try it out [http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/sose/real_time.html here].

'''ESIP Information Technology and Interoperability Committee

Outreach Package Development Project'''

In order to have a base set of materials that the Federation and its members may use in performing interoperability standards outreach to partner and external organizations and groups, the Federation Information Technology and Interoperability Committee has set aside funds for a small project focussed on the development of an outreach package as part of its FY10 work. This package will include the following materials:

* Presentation materials (in MS Powerpoint or as a PDF slide presentation format, with and without presenter’s notes) that
** provide an overview of key Earth Science interoperability standards
*** OGC: WxS, CSW, SOS
*** OpenDAP
*** Semantic Technologies
*** Metadata: FGDC, ISO 19115 and related standards
** case studies that illustrate the benefits of using interoperability standards
** information about computing platforms that may be used to implement and use standards-based Earth Science products
* An associated resource packet (in a format that can easily be integrated into the ESIP Wiki or Web Site for continued use and expansion) that includes online resource information for
** Available Earth Science services
** Standards
** Case study subjects
** Software vendors providing applications that implement the presented standards.

This project will assist the Federation in Meeting Strategic Goals 1 & 2 through the facilitation of communication of the benefits of and information about interoperability standards to the broader community of Earth Science data producers and consumers. The successful expansion in the use of Earth Science interoperability standards would benefit the entire community of Earth Science data and information users through the reduction in the barriers to the use and distribution of Earth Science products.

'''Submission Instructions'''

Proposals should be submitted via email as a single PDF document to the Chair of the IT&I Committee (Rahul Ramachandran, rramachandran(AT)itsc.uah.edu) before midnight (EDT) on June 15, 2010
207.46.199.45https://wiki.esipfed.org/w/index.php?title=Future_Meeting_Themes&diff=40213Future Meeting Themes2012-07-23T03:23:18Z
207.46.199.45: Reverted edits by Wteng (talk) to last revision by Mccann

=Please post your ideas for future meeting themes here=

These ideas can be general (e.g., data quality) or specific (e.g., the future of NetCDF)... we need this input to help guide planning for future meetings and also for sponsor organizations.

* Data rich rapid response to natural disasters
:*quality issues related to serving up real- or near real-time data
* From science to policy
* All things open source: Legal issues (with actual lawyers as part of the discussions); Group structures and governance; Designs that enable loosely-coupled groups to collaborate effectively
* Collaboration: cover the political, social and technical aspects of collaboration for research and applications. With the socio-political aspect, this may be best suited for a Washington meeting.
* Earth science data silos: work arounds and new practices and standards
* Earth data use in schools: what are the barriers?
* Earth data in support of global renewable energy research
* Earth Science Data for climate adaptation and in particular water resources management - are we prepared to meet the rising demand for Earth Science data ?
* Information Products created from Earth Science Data: their standardization, automation, metadata, lineage, quality, dissemination, and comparability.
* Decision support from earth science data - making effective use of uncertainty and other metadata to quantify results
207.46.199.45https://wiki.esipfed.org/w/index.php?title=Air_pollution_monitoring_model_takes_off_in_Australia&diff=40211Air pollution monitoring model takes off in Australia2012-07-22T20:29:43Z
207.46.199.45: Reverted edits by 157.55.18.24 (talk) to last revision by Erinmr

In Australia, the model has recently been used in Launceston where strong temperature inversions trap particulate emissions from wood fires, burning-off, vehicles and industry.

The software package predicts local meteorology and assesses the likely pathway and concentration of pollutants as they disperse.

Some new research directions are also emerging, such as the use of TAPM coupled with CSIRO’s complex chemistry model by CSIRO scientists Drs Martin Cope and Sunhee Lee. Applications include urban planning under future climate scenarios.
