General Meeting Overview

  • Meeting Runs Tuesday - Friday (noon)
  • First day - full or half day workshops
  • Second day - morning plenary; afternoon breakouts/technical sessions
  • Guidelines for workshops to be posted
  • FUNding Friday (move day) when on west coast
  • Sharpen the vision for FUNding Friday by Products and Services
  • Renaming the program
  • Theme Suggestions
  • Ted Habermann - first theme embodies cultural change needed in software (e.g. sustainable software)
  • Sustainable Software - key concepts; words
Chat posts
  • Frontiers of Earth data access: Sustainability in the Rockies
  • Or Frontiers in Sustainable Earth data access
  • Frontiers of sustainable Earth data access and use
  • "Frontiers" implies cutting edge or new approaches. That can be good, and challenging folks to think about what's new or old ways that are proven.
  • ... and I like that "frontiers" also ties into the West and mountain themes.
  • From the pioneers to the settlers on the frontier of Earth data access and use
  • …a sustainable approach…?
  • insert "sustainable" prior to Earth data
  • I'm for including the word, Software, explicitly and working to get sessions pointed in the direction of the cultural/organizational dynamics of scientific software as a first-class citizen.
  • If we can somehow incorporate what Sky suggested - I'm all for having software in the title. Just because I'm not necessarily a "software" person, I use it and need it to do what I do. Making the case to someone like me for sustainable software and how I can help do that would be key.

Environmental Impacts of In-Person Meetings

  • Conference Center is a green facility, focuses on waste reduction
  • Transportation alternatives to Frisco, CO
  • Look for ways to reduce carbon footprint
  • pick meeting venues that are 'greener'
  • we already do a lot virtually most of the year
  • Regionalize the summer meeting synchronously
  • One idea that might take things to the next level for ESIP would be to think about how we calculate Carbon ROI in addition to pushing Carbon Offsets. There's some interesting reading on how return on investment can be calculated in different scenarios. Calculating ROI at some level would also go a long way to helping to tell the ESI story as a whole. ESIP Winter Meeting 2014 generated ~$115K in direct tasks - $25K of that has already been spent. Winter Meeting Debrief

  • Erin Robinson provided an overview of the Winter Meeting evaluation responses. (Survey Results)
  • other comments
  • more protein choices at breakfast
  • earlier deadline for session submission
  • better remote capabilities, especially on audio
  • 7 parallel tracks might be too many
  • students need AV support to help them in each room

Summer Meeting 2014

  • Erin provided overview of meeting space in Frisco, CO at Copper Mountain.
  • Action: add altitude instructions to meeting website - tips for acclimating to elevation. (one example,
  • Other groups proposing to meet: DataONE (Michener/Koskela), LTER (Gries), OPeNDAP/HDF (Gallagher/Habermann), EC Enterprise Architecture (Yang), EC Data Facilities (Diggs), Drupal Lab (Caron)
  • Theme possibilities
  • Sustainable Software for Science Data and Services
  • OPeNDAP developers meeting at ESIP
  • HDF workshop (iPython notebook for sharing annotated data/analysis)
  • Software Carpentry boot camp
  • Science Software
  • Denise Hills - theme might not be inclusive enough
  • Carol Meyer - Software - the missing piece of a larger puzzle that includes data and systems
  • Peter Fox - Does the theme really infuse all of the meeting's activities. (Response - not really, probably with plenary sessions; less so for breakouts)
