Personal Mapping with Google Earth

From Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP)

In this session attendees will learn three techniques for customizing the data offerings in Google Earth to make it more personally useful, and therefore a more compelling teaching tool. First, we will learn the basics of KML, the spatial data "file format" of Google Earth. With this background in place, we will learn a number of methods for finding KML files on the Web and then displaying them within Google Earth. Then, we will learn the most powerful customization technique, creating KML files by hand, which allows students to map their own environments. Finally, we will spend a few minutes looking at advanced techniques for including Web Mapping Services (WMS) and real-time data in Google Earth.
