MODAPS Web Services - SOA machine-to-machine access to search and order MODIS data products

From Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP)

The MODAPS (MODIS Adaptive Processing System) Web Services provides a machine-to-machine API to level 1 and atmospheric archived MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data. For years the Level 1 and Atmospheric Archive and Distribution System (LAADS) Web site has provided a user-interactive GUI for accessing select MODIS data. However, current Earth science data users often want to use automated tools to select and process data. The proven LAADS system is reliable, but user interactive and therefore cannot service these automated tools. This is where the MODAPS Web Services comes in. MODAPS Web Services uses industry standard Web Service technologies to provide a robust, system-independent interface to the MODAPS data and processing system. MODAPS Web Services provides standard Web Service interfaces through both Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Representational State Transfer (REST) protocols as well as OpenSearch and the Open Geospatial Consortium’s Web Coverage Service (WCS) interfaces. This allows an unprecedented amount of access to the MODAPS system. Terrestrial Information Systems Branch (Code 614.5) of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center sponsors the MODAPS Web Services development. The development team, lead by Robert E. Wolfe, is comprised of original MODAPS and LAADS development personnel, NASA data production and archive specialists as well as Web Service technology experts. Currently MODAPS Web Services are in alpha testing with operational beta testing in Q3 2009. For more information contact:
