MAGEEP Educational Initiative

From Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP)

MAGEEP Ed Initiative Stakeholders

Like the Internet2, this is MAGEEP 2 in that we will offer wide and true multidisciplinary multinational collaboration, the co-creation and use of information (knowledge). We need to bring into this discussion all types of stakeholders

Regional

Sectorial

Demand and supply sides

Government

Industry

Academia

NGO

Societal Benefit Area

We need "champions" for each line of action

Water Quality

Air Quality

Energy

Other Environment

Sustainability

Health and Aging

MEEC Activities

Issues of entrepreneurship, citizenship, corporate responsibility and other skills should be interwoven into our "curriculum"

MEEC Governance and Sustainability

We need to identify a management/governance model

Governance

Central management by Wustl
Partially distributed to partners

Sustainability

Supporting other Organizations -- Guiding principles??

In the spirit of Globalization each partner should maintain its own unique "flavor" while building a common international posture for the collective. UN, UNESCO and others should be brought in as warranted. Examples:

  • IDC is installing a UNESCO Chair in Sustainability later this month
  • Do we have other relevant UNESCO chairs within MAGEEP
Funding - Support from other organizations

proposals can be generated to significant and relevant competitive and other sources, such as the European Commission, the Ford Foundation, etc…

EU COST, COST Energy

MEEC Core Foci

How does this initiative help us to strengthen our three core institutional foci:

Research

Develop Global Collaborator infrastructure

We are developing with this idea a global collaborator.

Co-develop knowledge

With it we will share and co-develop knowledge

Share the new and existing knowledge

Education

Develop an Online University
  • We are basically developing a joint online university.
  • We will have courses, perhaps whole programs (degree and otherwise)
Service
Connect and Enable Students, Faculty

We can bring our students together for joint community work

Knowledge repository

The knowledge repository we are developing will serve the global community. That said, perhaps not all content will be open or free to all, given IPR, ongoing research and secrecy restraints.

MEEC Tools and Methods

We should consider tools to be adopted by MAGEEP to facilitate our remote work. Whenever possible we should use open software platforms

Wiki Model

The wiki model is good

Moodle

Moodle should be considered also for course management

Success Measures

We need success measures

Courses offered

  • Online
  • Face-to-Face * Blended
  • Metrics: Number of courses, Number of participations, Revenue generated

Mobilities

  • Students
  • Faculty
  • Administration

Programs designed

Degree Students
  • For degree students 2Tor (Tier?) platform or other can be explored
Non-degree students (e.g. MOOCs)
  • We can target our alumni and the wider public (life-long learning)
  • We should consider a strategic agreements with Coursera, EdX, Udacity or other; these are brands attracting MANY students
  • We should also explore the use of TEDx-type mini lectures for our MAGEEP YouTube Channel

Repositories developed

Digital learning objects
Data and other resource objects
List of MAGEEP partner courses
Bios of MAGEEP faculty
A MAGEEP competencies database
Datasets
Best Practices

Educational Particulars

Education initiative particulars

Use Multiple Educational Channels

We should endeavor to bring our students together using diverse modes and models

  • technology-facilitated and f2f encounters
  • peer-learning, problem-based and project-based learning models

Link to Social Media

We need to link our information dissemination efforts to

  • Personal social media: LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter
  • Content sharing media: YouTube, Twitter, iTunes, Delicious, Slideshare and more

Broader Societal Impact

We need to think of additional channels to disseminate our findings in order to strengthen our collective impact

Broad-Scope International Organizations

  • Davos
  • UN System, OECD,

Domain Specific Organizations
