Kathe Todd-Brown Candidate Statement

Dr Katherine Todd-Brown (Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment, University of Florida) is self-nominating for the At Large position on the ESIP Board. She has not held an ESIP leadership position and is looking to increase her engagement with ESIP governance more broadly.

Dr Todd-Brown has co-founded two clusters in ESIP the Soil Ontology and Informatics cluster (2020) and the Operational Ethics cluster (2022). Both clusters focus on slow science and relationship building. The SOI cluster catalyzed a 2022 Biogeosciences paper with over two dozen co-authors with a second paper in the works. Dr Todd-Brown has a distinctive organizational structure for her clusters that includes pre-set agendas, dedicated networking time each meeting, post-meeting recaps, co-working time, and a feedback-decision process.

Dr Todd-Brown is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Engineering Sciences Department at Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment, University of Florida. She was awarded her PhD in Earth System Science from University of California Irvine in 2013 and a BS in Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College in 2004. She has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and US Department of Agriculture over the course of her career. She strives to answer the question “How does soil breath?” using computer models supported by data archives.
