Table 1: Concept of construction of new names
Table 1 provides the basic ideas of a concept for the construction of standard_names for aerosols and chemistry. The ideas in table 1 are mainly based on the PRISM project (Peter van Velthoven) see PRISM Standard Name Tables, latest Version, V 1.3
Remarks
- what is the difference between atmosphere and in_air? should be in_air only to distinguish from in_cloud etc.
- allways give atmosphere/ocean/soil?
- articles and prepositions should be avoided
- try to use SI units (e.g. not hours but seconds)
- how to distinguish ion - radicals, e.g. NO3 ?
- there is for some variable both mass_fraction and mole_fraction, I think we should take mole_fraction for gases and mass_fraction for aerosols, but only one at a time
- for sulfur and carbon aerosols the units should be in mass(S) and mass(C), respectively
- for column mass, the name 'content' is used, it should be changed to column
- what is equivalent_thicknss_at_stp_of_atmosphere_ozone_content?
- Should we also suggest names for variables and files?
- all forcing variables are still missing
