Education Collaboration Area Plan

Education Collaboration Area Objective:

  • Build awareness of and value for Earth Science data and data science among educators, especially in the region that surrounds the ESIP summer meeting locations. The Education Committee recruits local teachers to attend the summer ESIP Education workshop held in parallel to the main ESIP meeting (when applicable there is planned overlap of the meetings)
  • Offer in-reach with the remainder of ESIP when applicable. This will help the group remain relevant with its endeavors moving forward with ESIP and the greater education community

Charge to ESIP Education Committee

The committee's purpose is to promote the use of Earth science data, information, tools, and curricula available through the ESIP Federation among educators and learners. The committee's roles are:

  • To promote and facilitate the development and dissemination of educational products, information, and tools related to Earth and Space Sciences to a broad user community using the wealth of data and expertise available in the ESIP Federation
  • To promote and facilitate the collaboration of ESIP members to develop educational applications of Earth science data products, information, and tools
  • To provide a central organization for ESIP Federation educational materials to facilitate and standardize dissemination/distribution
  • To develop collaborative relationships with other organizations involved in educational activities

Things we may do to fulfill our objectives:

  • In 2016, we will develop and offer two webinars and one workshop on using recreational drones for STEM education.
  • Design & Publish the ESIP Education Drone Activity E-Book
  • Promote the use of UAV’s in the classroom through workshops (
- one webinar (part of the Out to Lunch webinar series
-Workshops at
  • the Earth Educator's Rendezvous, , , data management issues for drone data, activities for continued use in the STEM classroom
  • Summer Workshop - we'll work with local participants to test and refine activities.
  • Post-summer workshop - As an outcome of the work that has been done leading up to and including the summer educator workshop we will seek funding to design an attractive, freely downloadable e-book that can be used by classrooms that are looking to add UAV’s to their curriculum.

Things our collaboration area needs to deliver our objectives?

  • Collaboration with other ESIP working groups and committees.
  • Continued two-way communication with Federation leadership and the ESIP community
  • Funding for the proposed E-Book
  • Looking for other ESIP member (drone cluster participant/SME) who would like to serve as a speaker for a scheduled webinar or summer workshop session

How will we know we are on the right track?

  • Formative evaluation following each of our webinars or teacher workshops. This will allow us to correct course and improve content and interactions before the next workshop/outreach event.
  • Formative assessment during events to measure participant knowledge retention
  • Set clear goals for each webinar, meeting, outreach event or other like events
  • Gauge Interest - do this on a continual basis (workshop registration, webinars, etc…)

How will others know what we are doing in & out of ESIP?

Cross-collaboration area connections

  • E-book distribution - Based on the work and events leading up to and including the summer workshop, the Education Committee aims to produce an E-Book that will act as a guide, curriculum suggestions, and basic background knowledge for including UAV’s in the classroom.
  • NSTA Session - For the 2016 National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Education Committee, has submitted session proposals at each of the three regional meetings to present to the science education community on the work that the Education group with recreational UAV’s for the classroom
  • AGU,AMS,GSA (professional conference) - Submit sessions, to sessions, or poster presentations based on the outcomes of the teacher interactions surrounding the summer educator workshops
  • Response from recruitment efforts (webinars and summer workshop participation). We have noticed a great response rate.
