ESIP Participant RORs

The ESIP 2020 Winter Meeting ~225 participants registered as of December 25, 2019. As individuals register, they provide the names of the organizations that they are representing at the meeting, i.e. their affiliations. Identifying these organizations consistently and persistently is an important step towards connecting them into the growing body of Earth Science scholarly communication and knowledge. An initial step towards this goal is to search for organizational identifiers using the affiliations in the Winter Meeting registration list as input. The results of such a search carried out during December 2019 are described here.

The Tables included here have the following columns:

  1. Affiliation - the affiliation input, in this case from the ESIP Meeting Registration List.
  2. ROR - the identifier for the organization found in the input affiliation using several strategies.
  3. Organization Name - the name of the organization from the ROR
  4. Country - the country of the organization from the ROR
  5. Warning - a warning identified in the discovery process that indicates the ROR should be checked by hand. These occur when multiple organizations have the same name or when an acronym in the affiliation is used to make the match. Additional information is required in these cases to identify the correct ROR.
  6. Comment - other information about the match

Participant Affiliations With One ROR

The best case scenario is the affiliation string returning a single ROR returned using multiple search strategies. These RORs are generally correct, but there are some that need to be checked, some that are suspicious, and some that are wrong.

The results shown here are have not been "cleaned-up" in order to help ESIP members become familiar with common challenges encountered during ROR searches.

Participant Affiliations With Multiple RORs

In some cases multiple RORs are identified in the search. In some cases, this reflects multiple organization names in the affiliation string, many times at different levels in the overall organization. In other cases it reflects ambiguity in the affiliation that needs additional information to be resolved.

In some cases a lookup table developed as part of a curation process is used during the ROR search. This lookup table includes a-priori knowledge developed during prior experience or ROR searches. Some matches achieved using this table appear to be magic.

Participation Affiliations Without RORs

The Research Organization Registry is a community-led project that aims to develop an open, sustainable, usable, and unique identifier for every research organization in the world. The current version of the registry is based on GRIDs donated to the effort by Digital Science. This registry will grow based on input from the community. Until the ROR community takes over curation and management of the Registry, the contents will continue to be the GRID data. New organizations can be suggested through the GRID website.

Affiliation Diversity

It is well known that information entered as free-text is inconsistent and generally difficult to use. Unfortunately, in some cases, that is the only information available. The problems associated with free-text input are the principle motivation for developing and adopting persistent and unique identifiers.

The affiliations of ESIP participants are currently entered into the registration form as free-text and they illustrate some of the free-text challenges nicely. This Table shows RORs that were identified by multiple affiliation strings along with those strings. In the ROR-rich world, each of these input affiliations would match the standard organization names defined by ROR and there would be no ambiguity. That is the goal we are headed for.
