ESIP Vision

To be a leader in promoting the collection, stewardship and use of Earth science data, information and knowledge that are responsive to societal needs.

2015-2020 Strategic Plan Goals

  • Increase the use and value of Earth science data and information.
  • Strengthen the ties between observations and user communities (e.g. technologies, research, education and applications).
  • Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information, and applications.
  • Position ESIP to play a major role in Earth science issues (e.g. addressing effects of climate change mitigation, adaptation and supporting sustainable science data infrastructure).

Collaboration Area Plan

Collaboration Area Objective:

Promote information management expertise across the earth and environmental sciences through the sharing and development of software tools for common information management tasks.

Things we may do to fulfill our objectives:

  • Inform the earth and environmental sciences community of our efforts through a variety of media (e.g. list-serves, presentations, conferences, Twitter, etc.).
  • Identify useful software for common information management tasks.
  • Register software with rich metadata to fully describe salient attributes and improve discovery.
  • Facilitate connections and collaborations across the community.
  • Develop software to meet new and challenging information management tasks.
  • Maintain the Information Management Code Registry.
  • Align our efforts with community recommendations.

Things our collaboration area needs to deliver our objectives?

  • Continued implementation by the core group of participants.
  • Participation from the broader community to register software.
  • OntoSoft persistence and support for feature requests.

How will we know we are on the right track?

  • The number of registered software items continuously increases.
  • Traffic to the IMCR increases.
  • Participation in community events increases.
  • Software citation increases.

How will others know what we are doing in & out of ESIP?

  • Monthly ESIP telecons and list-serve.
  • Meeting minutes will be logged to the cluster wiki.
  • Twitter (#IMcodeRegistry)
  • Participant affiliations and associated networks (e.g. Kristin and Colin work with the Environmental Data Initiative).

Cross-collaboration area connections

  • Software metadata cross-walk
  • Improving discovery of registered software
