ESIP Collaboration Area Strategic Plan 2016

ESIP Vision

To be a leader in promoting the collection, stewardship and use of Earth science data, information and knowledge that are responsive to societal needs.

2015-2020 Strategic Plan Goals

  • Increase the use and value of Earth science data and information.
  • Strengthen the ties between observations and user communities (e.g. technologies, research, education and applications).
  • Promote techniques to articulate and measure the socioeconomic value and benefit of Earth science data, information, and applications.
  • Position ESIP to play a major role in Earth science issues (e.g. addressing effects of climate change mitigation, adaptation and supporting sustainable science data infrastructure).

Collaboration Area Plan

Collaboration Area Objective:

  • Build awareness of and value for Earth Science data and data science among educators. Especially in the region that surrounds the ESIP summer meeting locations. The Education Committee recruits local teachers to attend the summer ESIP Education workshop held in parallel to the main ESIP meeting (when applicable there is planned overlap of the meetings)
  • Offer in-reach with the remainder of ESIP when applicable. This will help the group remain relevant with its endeavours moving forward with ESIP and the greater education community

Things we may do to fulfill our objectives:

  • In 2016, we will develop and offer two webinars and one workshop on using recreational drones for STEM education. The webinars and workshop will address the following:
  • The use of UAV’s in the classroom, data management issues for drone data, activities for continued use in the STEM classroom
  • Summer Workshop - we'll work with local participants to test and refine activities.
  • Post-summer workshop - As an outcome of the work that has been done leading up to and including the summer educator workshop we will seek funding to design an attractive, freely downloadable e-book that can be used by classrooms that are looking to add UAV’s to their curriculum.
