Agenda: • Rant by Hook Hua NASA/JPL entitled “Workflow Engines: Why So Many?” • ESIP Summer Meeting Technical Workshops

Review of the current list of submitted abstracts
              http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Summer_2010_Technical_Workshops
           Discussion on possible scheduling

Hook’s Presentation Abstract: Workflow engines are becoming more commonly used in Earth Science data systems. But the with plethora of workflow engines to choose from and the variability of their capabilities, it may be time consuming to assess which workflow engine is best suited for a particular domain adaptation. We will explore the diverse capabilities of a few selected workflow engines and discuss some of the relevant capabilities useful for Earth Science data systems.

Telecon Agenda:

1. Presentation: Five Years after Brussels: a First Review of GEOSS by Yana Gevorgyan and John Adamec

2. Suggestions for Technical Workshops for upcoming the ESIP Summer Meeting in Knoxville, TN [Visioneers telecon link: http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Visioneers_Telecon_Page] 3. Interoperability Standards Outreach Package Development – Next Steps! (Karl to lead)

Presentation Abstract: On 22 January, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group launched the planned mid-term evaluation of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). Over the coming months an evaluation team will examine the progress that has been made toward achieving the strategic goals that are intended to achieve the GEOSS Vision. In particular, the evaluation will look at the foundation that has been laid for GEOSS as well as progress along the path to implementing GEOSS and the impacts of GEOSS in the Earth observing community. Direct feedback from the Earth observation community is necessary to complete this evaluation. The evaluation team is conducting a survey, interviews, and reaching out to participants to locate other documents and reviews of GEOSS and its components. We would like to invite the members of ESIP to contribute to the evaluation however they can but especially by responding to the survey and spreading awareness of the evaluation to their colleagues. The survey is available online until the end of March and members of the Team are working to make contact with and collect feedback directly from the users of GEOSS on a short timeline. If you know of research literature, white papers, or other items such as evaluations of GEOSS that could be helpful to the team, or if you have further questions, we would be happy to hear from you. To follow up, please contact Team member John Adamec by email at john.adamec@noaa.gov.

Telecon Meeting Notes

Feb 03, 2010 Telecon Agenda:

Rants and Raves Webinar Series Kickoff - February 03 at 01:00 PM CST

The ESIP Information Technology and Interoperability Committee this year will host Rants and Raves Webinar series. The Rants and Raves Webinar provides a platform to any ESIP member to present any Information Technology and Interoperability related issues, seek suggestions/ideas or present cool new technology useful to the ESIP community. Dr. Christopher Lynnes will kickoff the series with a rant on the difficulties associated with Earth Science data on Feb 03, 2010 at 1:00 PM CT.

Earth Science Data: Why So Difficult? Dr. Christopher Lynnes

Assembling a multi-sensor set of data for, say, a volcanic eruption means days of wandering cyberspace to find data and pry it loose from the custom search interfaces that jealously guard it. Following the Search is a slog of weeks reading format and QA documents, then cobbling together code to beat the data into a form that can be used safely in analysis tools. Why so difficult?$%#@^%!???

Above rant to be followed by a (mostly) calm and rational discussion of ways toward a solution.

Other Agenda Items: - Suggestions for Technical Workshops for Summer Meeting (ideas for different theme focus, volunteers to lead different themes) - Volunteers for giving Rants and Raves Webinar - Review of semi-structured publication strawman - Review of the proposal budget
