Characterization of ambient air quality and atmospheric deposition is a fundamental requirement underlying air program management, human and ecosystem health assessment needs shared by multiple Federal agencies. The aggregate convergence of (1) recent advances in technology, (2) the value of linked multiple-pollutant-media assessments combined with (3) decreasing agency resources demand more efficient integration of the nation’s monitoring resources. Accordingly, this strategic effort intends to improve the usefulness of the nation’s air quality observation systems through a leveraged multiple agency approach. Improved data access and interpretation within and across agencies and filling critical observation gaps in line with current and future assessment demands should catalyze this integration.
